I've been to La Ceiba about 5 times in the past 10 years. I never found myself to be particularly uncomfortable personal-security-wise. Safe compared to where? Are you experienced with any other cities in Latin America? I live in what used to be an unsafe city -- New Orleans -- which has become much safer of late. To me, La Ceiba was one of the safer cities I've visited. Maybe I'm ignorant of crime there, but I felt it was MUCH safer that Tegus, in addtion to safer than San Pedro Sula, ditto Tela. Health-wise, I guess there's some small danger of malaria and dengue fever, but you can start to take anti-malarials before you arrive. I used to get "Montezuma's revenge", but it doesn't happen so much at all anymore to me. Don't recall it ever happening in La Ceiba to me. I guess I've developed an immunity, as I had been told I would. Due to the fruit co. operations there, I suspect there are some pretty top notch doctors there, too. Dengue, just like the flu, is painful, and can cause major problems like the flu can, but most of the time, like the flu, it doesn't. Drop me an e-mail if you have any questions. I'd jump at the opprtunity to study Spanish there! or in Copan. P.S. The crocs in the town square probably haven't eaten too many passers-by of late, either. You'll see what I mean when you get there. Enjoy!
